Holiday Workshop with Claire Patten:
Mock Exam Workshop with Claire Patten 2018 NZAMD Examiner
Dance Exams are an excellent way for your dancer to be guided through a set syllabus which provides them a goal to work towards and the building blocks necessary to achieve that goal. Children who sit dance exams gain a greater sense of confidence and determination not only in their dance training but in their personal lives as well. Dance Exams allow dancers the opportunity to learn how to speak to strangers (their outside examiner) and present themselves in a professional manner. These skills will come in handy when it is time for a job or university interview. Dance Exams also highlight to your child the importance of showing up and putting the work in. It is not possible to just “wing” a dance exam. Dancers must put their time in, in order to be adequately prepared for their examination & this also applies for school exams.
The NZAMD & RBM syllabuses that we teach have professional examiners who go around the country examining all dance studios exams. As they are professionals themselves they work business hours which may mean that your child’s dance exam falls during school time. If this does happen you will need to take a few hours off school for that day.
For students from Grade 1 and up, there are two styles of exams our students are able to sit – a formal examination or an assessment.
Formal Examinations
In a formal examination, students will be asked to perform all of the exercises in their grade. They will have to remember each exercise’s name, where to stand and how to prepare. They do not have any assistance from their teacher so it is important that the students know their exam work well and can perform it with confidence. The children are graded on how well they present their exam both technically and in performance. The children receive a report card with their grade and notes from the examiner. They are presented with a beautiful certificate at our end of year prize giving.
Assessment Programme
The NZAMD have introduced a new assessment option for children who love to come to class but don’t want the added pressure of sitting a dance exam. Students who have chosen to sit an assessment still perform their exam work to an examiner with their peers but their report will be marked ‘Successfully Assessed’ instead of a grade. We feel this is a great alternative for children who are just starting out in dance or do not want the added pressure of sitting dance exams.
Exam Intensive Workshops
If you are sitting your NZAMD exam it is compulsory for you to attend a workshop in the Term 2 school holidays. This year we are lucky to have Claire Patten running our NZAMD intensive. Claire is an NZAMD examiner and will be able to give you valuable feedback on how you are presenting your exam work. Our NZAMD Workshops will be held from Tuesday 16 th – Thursday 18 th July (timetable to be released soon!)
